What is a Thermostatic Mixer? 

A thermostatic shower mixer is designed to mix and regulate water temperature with far greater accuracy than a standard mixer. The key difference sits inside the cartridge: a small wax element that expands and contracts as the incoming water temperature changes. It's a simple bit of engineering that delivers consistently safer, more comfortable showers.

How does it work?

The wax element does the clever work:

• If the water runs too cold, the wax contracts, allowing more hot water through (or reducing the cold flow).
• If the water runs too hot, the wax expands and does the opposite.

This constant micro-adjustment is what holds your shower at a steady temperature, no matter what's happening elsewhere in the plumbing.

What are the advantages of a Thermostatic Mixer?

A thermostatic mixer adds safety, comfort, and convenience to your daily shower, which is why they're an increasingly popular choice for both residential and commercial bathrooms.

Precise Temperature Control:
The built-in thermostat monitors the mixed water and adjusts the hot and cold flow to maintain a steady output.

Safety:
All Robertson thermostatic mixers include a safety stop at 38°C, designed to prevent accidental scalding. If the cold water supply changes significantly, the mixer immediately shuts off the flow, which also prevents sudden temperature spikes.

Going hotter:
Press the safety button and turn the handle anticlockwise to override the 38°C stop. In line with Watermark and WELS standards, the maximum outlet temperature is capped at 44°C.

Consistency:
Once set, your chosen temperature stays put, even if water pressure changes elsewhere in the system (think dishwasher, laundry, or a second shower running).
