Bathroom Trends for 2023

Here in New Zealand, as we head out of the summer and into the cooler autumn and winter months, we wanted to look forward and discuss some of the most popular bathroom trends for 2023.

Many Kiwis put off major house renovations until the clocks move back, bringing with it darker nights and more time spent indoors. This is the ideal time to get stuck into renovation projects around the home and one of the most popular places to start is the bathroom.

Whether it’s a small guest bathroom or a large family-sized bathroom renovation, there are a number of trends sweeping the world right now when it comes to bathrooms of all sizes. In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the most popular bathroom trends for 2023.

At the end of the post, you will also find some of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to bathroom design trends – you can skip straight to those FAQs if you are looking for answers to your bathroom renovation questions.

If you are looking for the latest bathroom trends though, here are five to keep an eye on in 2023:

1.      Backlit mirrors

A bathroom mirror is a staple of any bathroom layout, large or small and one of the biggest trends we expect to see in 2023 is mirrors with in-built lighting. As well as adding additional soft lighting to your bathroom, backlit mirrors are both aesthetic and practical.

They come in all shapes and sizes, making them a perfect addition to any bathroom design. At Robertson, we have a number of options when it comes to backlit mirrors including the Parisi Arrivo LED Mirror. Framed by a stylish natural veneer finish or polyurethane, the Arrivo LED Mirror includes a sensor, demister and LED lighting. The square or rectangular mirror comes in three sizes – 800, 1,200, and 1,400.

If you are looking for a round bathroom mirror with backlighting, check out the Parisi Tondo LED Mirror which includes an infrared sensor and de-fogger function as well as an LED backlight.

2.      Walk-in showers

This has been a trend that has been growing for a number of years now, however, showers have definitely reached a tipping point in 2023 with research from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and 2022 Bathroom Trends research from Houzz showing increasing popularity in shower upgrades.

In addition to expanding shower sizes and multiple showerheads, one of the biggest trends to watch out for in 2023 is walk-in showers.

As well as offering a high degree of practicality, walk in showers also allow you to express yourself by maximising the use of tiles throughout the bathroom, with many choosing to use colourful tiles as part of their walk-in shower to add extra pop to the overall bathroom design.

Of course, walk-in showers are also great for older people or people with mobility issues as they offer easy access. They are also easy to clean and can help to make smaller bathrooms feel bigger by removing any additional “furniture” to a bathroom in the shape of shower glass and doors.

At Robertson, we have a range of showers and body jets that are all recommended for walk-in showers. Talk to the team for advice if you are thinking about adding a walk-in shower to your bathroom design in 2023.

3.      Terrazzo

Terrazzo continues its resurgence as we head into 2023 and it’s easy to see why this bathroom tile has become such a popular addition to bathroom designs around the world. Terrazzo has a cool retro vibe going on which can really help to bring a touch of chic to a bathroom design, helping to elevate your bathroom space.

As well as looking very cool, Terrazzo is also extremely hard wearing and easy to maintain, making it ideal for busy bathrooms.

Terrazzo is often used to add pop to bathrooms with a neutral palette and with lots of Terrazzo décor available, it’s easy to add little details to a bathroom that features Terrazzo already.

4.      Spa inspiration

Again, this is perhaps a trend that has been growing over the past couple of years, especially since the COVID pandemic forced so many people to spend more time at home.

Time spent at home led more people to think of their bathroom more as a place to relax than the strictly functional and practical space it is typically thought of as.

Creating a spa-inspired environment is not as difficult as it sounds. Whilst walk-in showers are trending in 2023, there is still room for bathtubs and if you are creating a spa-inspired bathroom design, then a bathtub is essential.

Topping the most wanted list when it comes to spa-inspired bathtubs are freestanding baths. Nothing says luxury more than a freestanding bath and if you have the space, then it is a great addition.

Of course, if you don’t have room for a freestanding bath, or even a bathtub, you can still create a spa-like environment. Body jets, rainfall shower heads, and steam showers can help to create a relaxing environment, coupled with luxurious towels and soft inviting colours.

5.      Seaside colours

Whether you live by the coast or you are holding onto those holiday vibes, seaside colours including shades of blue and green are going to be a big trend in 2023.

When paired together, blue and teal can help to recreate that ocean feel, especially those deep, rich tones. If you want something a bit softer, pastel hues are a great colour, helping to create a relaxing, calming environment that is clean and fresh.

Other popular colours for bathrooms in 2023 will include olive green and black, but will also include bright and uplifting colours including warm pinks and clay colours.

Whether it’s your tiles or your taps, your accessories or your shower, it can be nice to break out from the traditional neutral colours typically associated with a bathroom to create a unique space.

Bathroom trend FAQs

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to bathroom trends in 2023:

What are the best colours for bathrooms in 2023?

We’ve already touched on some of the most popular bathroom colours for 2023 above including blue, green, olive, and even black. We still expect neutral colours to be the most popular colours for bathrooms in 2023 and these include soft greys, taupe, light blue, and light green. If you are looking to create a relaxing spa-inspired bathroom environment, these colours will work extremely well, creating a relaxing environment in which to unwind and relax in the comfort of your own home.

What is the most popular bathroom fixture finish in 2023?

Whilst chrome continues to dominate most bathroom fixture finishes, we are seeing a rise in popularity of a number of warmer finishes including aged bronze, brass, and matte black. Other popular finishes include brushed nickel and gun metal.

What is the most popular trending tile look in 2023?

We have already talked about the popularity of Terrazzo as we head into 2023 and large-format tiles will be one of the most popular bathroom tiles trends in 2023. Terrazzo has been in and out of style over the past few decades, however, in 2023, it is definitely right back on trend. Large-format tiles help to create a sleek and modern look in bathrooms, with minimal grout lines. They can be used on walls, floors, and in the shower and are available in a variety of materials.

How to decorate your bathroom in 2023?

In addition to the colours and fixture finishes we have already mentioned, other popular ways to decorate your bathroom in 2023 will include geometric tilework, freestanding basins, open-spout mixers, wood vanities, natural materials, and for smaller bathrooms, wall-mounted fixtures to free up floor space and make the space feel much bigger.
